I am Krisztina Németh, an architect and glass designer.
I design cast glass objects and architectural glass, where precise design always meets the unpredictability of the material.
As an architect and glass designer, I am drawn equally to what can be precisely planned and to the unpredictable. That is precisely what makes working with glass so exciting to me: the process, built with engineering precision, intersects at a certain point with the material’s own laws and spontaneity.
In recent years, I have primarily been designing functional objects—often Japanese-inspired—related to food presentation. Among other things, I have created a bowl for serving steak tartare, a ramen bowl, and a chopstick holder; my most recent works have even found their way to one of Tokyo’s leading sushi restaurants. Several of my glasses and bowls are part of the Trafik Kör Contemporary Art Collection.
After completing my training as a glass artisan, I participated in numerous master classes in glass design. However, my work is not limited to object design. I contributed to the restoration of the mosaic frieze at the Polgári Brewery on Népszínház Street through an experimental glass transformation project, and I also worked on the reconstruction of the stained-glass windows at the Reformed Church in Városliget.
Compared to architectural projects, the creation of a glass object is a more direct process: the path from design to completion is shorter, and feedback is almost immediate. And the differences between the designed form and the finished object are not the result of compromises, but are shaped primarily by the physical properties of the material. It is precisely this tension between control and unpredictability that serves as a constant source of motivation for me.
It’s also important to me that glass is a durable material that can be reused over and over again. I want to create objects out of it that aren’t merely decorative, but become part of everyday life as they’re used.
My studio is located on the north side of Lake Velence, where you can also work with me in workshops.
